Write down the plan you agree to with your provider
This can be helpful so that you can discuss results with your provider at your appointment
I encourage everyone to read consents carefully, and be prepared to discuss any concerns you may have. When you do sign consent, be sure there are NO abbreviations, and that you understand the risks and benefits.
Many surgeons use colleagues during procedures, you have the right to know who else is involved. Although sometimes assistance is needed unexpectedly during surgery, so you may not have prior knowledge.
This is helpful in any setting. During hospitalizations you may see several providers in a short amount of time and it can get confusing on who's coming and going. You can write notes on the back on the service they provided you.
There are many programs that are available to help you with bills, medical devices, and therapies. Just ask! (But ask BEFORE surgery)
After procedures or hospitalization you will need to follow-up with the provider that helped you, physical or occupational therapy, wound care, or a nurse. Be sure to write down when this follow-up is expected.
Most services have a patient portal that you can access and see provider notes, results from radiology and labs, areas to update your medications and health history, and message center to communicate with your providers
It has become very difficult to see specialists these days. Make a plan with your provider on what you can do in the meantime to manage your symptoms and when to seek emergency care.
